Our Mission

Sometimes the death of a loved one gives birth to something else.  In this case, it was the death of two friends that inspired the birth of the Standing-N-Truth (SNT) organization and its first film project, Standing-N-Truth: Breaking the Silence.  Dying of AIDS-related complications just months apart (2005-06), both a gay male and a transgendered male-to-female had been living with the disease for many years.  But like most African Americans who test late, their treatment options were limited.

Daniels believed that his personal story of being diagnosed with HIV and sharing that story with them would have been enough to persuade them to a similar discovery.  He understands that the deep-rooted cultural stigma and shame around sex and sexuality make it difficult for many people to face their reality.  He attempted to guide them and their families to public medical treatment services, but it was too late.  During this devastating time of loss, he realized that his purpose in life was to help others improve their way of life.  He decided that it is imperative that people “know their status before it is too late and to demand the public services and treatment to which they are entitled as tax paying citizens,” says Daniels.

As a forty-year old African American male who has lived with HIV for more than 20 years, Daniels has had a full dose of first hand experience with fear, shame, and discrimination within his family and community.  Yet, he has also experienced the power of self-acceptance by breaking the silence to engage in open discussions with various groups including his family.  It is his life experience and interactions with diverse members of the community which have led to the development of a program that has practical application on a number of levels.  The two co-founders of the SNT organization and co-producers of the documentary, Tadhi Coulter and Rorie Burton, are also homosexual African American men with close ties to their communities and families, with a desire and fervor to help people see the value in themselves through self awareness.  The three visionaries, the director and co-producers, come from traditional, conservative backgrounds.  Their attitudes and philosophies on life are shaped with empathy and tolerance as homosexual, black men.  This valuable perspective cannot help but transfer into all areas of their lives, including the film project that transcends a message of inclusiveness and love for humankind, regardless of sex, age, sexual orientation, gender, or race.

Our mission is to educate members of diverse communities on the importance of respecting and valuing themselves; to empower them to make responsible choices concerning their well-being and ultimately to encourage them to lead by example in their respective communities despite adversity.
