The Kaski Oral Health Care Project was founded in 2004. It simultaneously builds local infrastructure and provides educational programs in the district of Kaski, Nepal.
Kaski is comprised largely of subsistence farming villages in the foothills of the Himalayan Annapurna mountain range. It includes the city of Pokhara.
KOHCP began a few years ago in the village of Kaskikot, where there was no oral health care available. An untreated toothache, the saying went, “is worse than the pain of childbirth.” Today, extraction and filling are offered weekly at a local clinic, where checkups, treatment and referral are performed by a trained medical technician. Education and treatment seminars run eight to ten times a year.
Over 4550 children and adults have participated in KOHCP programs.
A combination of facilities development and educational programing empowers Kaski residents to care for themselves. Over time, the successful KOHCP model will be expanded to surrounding areas.
