My mission statement

It is my mission to share our life story in hopes to support other children and their families who are living a unique life experience.  It is my goal to raise awareness of the power and importance of all unique souls.   I believe that Lorrin was here to pave the way to a grander attitude of love and acceptance for all.  It is my honor  as her parent to help spread her life’s message of love and forgiveness.

You Get Proud by Practicing
by Laura Hershey

If you are not proud
For who you are, for what you say, for how you look;
If every time you stop
To think of yourself, you do not see yourself glowing
With golden light; do not, therefore, give up on yourself.
You can get proud.

You do not need
A better body, a purer spirit, or a Ph.D.
To be proud.
You do not need
A lot of money, a handsome boyfriend, or a nice car.
You do not need
To be able to walk, or see, or hear,
Or use big, complicated words,
Or do any of those things that you just can’t do
To be proud. A caseworker
Cannot make you proud,
Or a doctor.
You only need more practice.
You get proud by practicing.

There are many many ways to get proud.
You can try riding a horse, or skiing on one leg,
Or playing guitar,
And do well or not so well,
And be glad you tried
Either way.
You can show
Something you’ve made
To someone you respect
And be happy with it no matter
What they say.
You can say
What you think, though you know
Other people do not think the same way, and you can
keep saying it, even if they tell you
You are crazy.

You can add your voice
All night to the voices
Of a hundred and fifty others
In a circle
Around a jailhouse
Where your brothers and sisters are being held
For blocking buses with no lifts,
Or you can be one of the ones
Inside the jailhouse,
Knowing of the circle outside.
You can speak your love
To a friend
Without fear.
You can find someone who will listen to you
Without judging you or doubting you or being
Afraid of you
And let you hear yourself perhaps
For the very first time.
These are all ways
Of getting proud.
None of them
Are easy, but all of them
Are possible. You can do all of these things,
Or just one of them again and again.
You get proud
By practicing.

Power makes you proud, and power
Comes in many fine forms
Supple and rich as butterfly wings.
It is music
when you practice opening your mouth
And liking what you hear
Because it is the sound of your own
True voice.

It is sunlight
Wen you practice seeing
Strength and beauty in everyone,
Including yourself.
It is dance
when you practice knowing
That what you do
And the way you do it
Is the right way for you
And cannot be called wrong.
All these hold
More power than weapons or money
Or lies.
All these practices bring power, and power
Makes you proud.
You get proud
By practicing.

Remember, you weren’t the one
Who made you ashamed,
But you are the one
Who can make you proud.
Just practice,
Practice until you get proud, and once you are proud,
Keep practicing so you won’t forget.
You get proud
By practicing.

On Monday December 21, 2010, I was interviewed by Betsy Hicks for Autism One Radio -  Click here to listen.  You can click on Betsy’s picture above to link to her website.  Betsy is also on my Favorite page.

If you are looking for motivation click on either picture above to view Aaron Baker’s website.  A great story and what an inspiration.  Thank you Aaron Baker:)

above and on the left  - Visit Wombs for Wisdom, which is hosted by Megan Assaf.  I work with Megan via Skype or telephone.  She has been an integral part of helping me to balance myself energetically and understand what my soul agreement is.  I am not sure where I would be with out her teachings and guidance.  You can link to her Energy and Spirit Therapy section to learn more.

Please watch this piece from, “Mom on the Streets.”  It was filmed in 2007.  Emily, Taylor, Lauren and Sarah talk about  how they met Lorrin and why they enjoyed having a friendship with her.

A reaction to a vaccination can be as simple as a red rash or as scary as a seizure. All reactions should be reported to VAERS. Vaccination_Awareness.html
My heart calls - Lorrin never communicated with her voice. As her mother I always spoke for her. I feel because I allowed people to ask questions about her we bridged the gap that tends to separate friendships. Lorrin always felt very comfortable with who she was. It is my belief by sharing her uniqueness and answering questions it enabled Lorrin in having typical life experiences that included; being a the Vice President of her Girl Scout Troop, participating in The Miss Pre-teen Pasadena Pageant, summer camp at the Jr. Blind of America with her best friend Sarah Rivera; endless sleepovers and typical life experiences that supported her to enjoy the best life possible. In her honor I am working on a project called, “What I Want You To Know.” Please click here to learn more about it. If you are living a unique life experience I would love to hear from YOU!What_I_Want_You_to_Know.html

I am a proud parent of a beautiful young soul who came here to teach me and others the importance of love, forgiveness and compassion.  I encourage all parents to find the magic in their lives.  Our children came here to teach no matter their ability.

Join me at the Abilities Expo, in Los Angeles March 30-April 1, 2012. I am excited to announce that my 2012, keynote presentations will focus on what I did to bridge the friendship gap between mainstream peers and Lorrin.
As always I will be reminding parents that parenting a unique child is the most important job they will ever have.

One piece of information I learned recently was that children who have Autism have the tendency to be runners.  The number one cause of death with Autistic children  is due to drowning.  I know as Lorrin’s mother when I was sleep deprived I was emotional and basically just couldn’t cope.    When I met Aaron Clow, owner of Beds by George I felt compelled to share this information.  It is my belief it is a parents right to get sound sleep each night so that they can function at their best and enjoy their children.  Please check out this website.  The beds are beautiful and also have a canopy stye to fully enclose the bed for total safety.
