Loren Madsen/1990's
The 1990's started with a sculpture for LaGuardia Community College in New York which, due to the recession which marked the early 90's, was the last commission for a good while. I continued large scale installations which had a more narrative bent than previously. "Missing Matter" spoke to cosmological concerns and "Rack" to more personal ones. A growing impatience with installation art's dependency on other people's sites and programs, along with a desire for more personal control of the process of art-making drove me into the studio to do a series of carvings in 1994 and 1995. These urges, for more control, smaller scale, and a desire for narrative and/or content led me to a new series of sculptures called Historical Abstracts (more details under that name) which made explicit what had been implicit in Missing Matter and others, namely concerns social and otherwise. These pieces account for the majority of my art making in the 1990's.
