NAGYMIHALY/MICHALOVCE
NAGYMIHALY/MICHALOVCE
At the end of World War I, the Neumann family moved back to Michalovce, Slovakia, formerly Nagymihaly, Hungary, a few kilometers west of Sobrance. My paternal grandfather Viktor Neumann died in Michalovce on December 31, 1920, a few days after my father Elemer left for New York City. Elemer’s older brothers had already emigrated in November, 1920. My grandmother Hermina and her daughters left in March, 1921. Viktor is buried in Michalovce not far from his in-laws, Markusz Moskovits and Sali Kohn, and other Moskovits relatives. Markusz and Sali lived on Andrassy utca in Michalovce until their deaths in the mid-1920’s.
