MIKSA NEUMANN AND OTTILIE POLACSEK FAMILY

Miksa Neumann and Ottilie Polacsek had at least five children, four of whom lived to adulthood.  The first may have been a son Ludvik, who was born in Szobrancz on 13 October 1864.  Although no other records for Ludvik have come to light, he probably died before 1901 when his nephew Lajos (the Hungarian version of Ludvik), Viktor’s second oldest son, was born.  Rosza, whom some records also identify as Terez, was born 23 January 1866.  My grandfather Viktor (Avigdor Avraham ben Meier haLevi) was born 20 November 1868, a sister Josefina (Jozsa) on 28 August 1871 and Markus (Marci) on 20 August 1883.

Because women typically gave birth every two years and five would have been an unusually small number of children, it is likely that Ottilie gave birth to another child between November, 1868, and August, 1871 and at least two others between 1871 and 1883.  The three-year gap between Viktor and Josefina suggests that a child born in 1870 died as an infant.

The Szobrancz birth records identify two other women who might have been born to Miksa and Ottilie.  Although it would have been unusual to give a daughter the same name as her mother, records of births in Szobrancz mention Eidel Neuman, probably born about 1870, who married Fulop Steif from Garanas (Gereny?), now Horjani, Ukraine.  The records also include Hani Neuman, born in Szobrancz, who married David Moskovits from Lasztomer.  David might have also been related to my grandmother Hermina Moskovits.

In 1886, Rosza married Simon Zicherman, son of Izak Zicherman and Regi Krukk.  Regi’s father may have been Farkas Kruk, a merchant born in Szobrancz in 1828 who was living in Ungvar at the time of the 1848 Census.  There were no birth records  in Szobrancz for children born to Rosza and Simon and no other information has yet come to light about this family.

Viktor Neumann, 1868-1920

             Markus (Marci) Neumann, 1883-1912

From the inscription on the back of the above picture of Markus Neumann, we know that he died “at home” in 1912.  There  is no indication where home might have been.  The picture was taken by a photographer in Budapest but I have not found any information showing that Markus lived in Budapest or that he is buried there.

Josefina was 18 when she married Ignacz Rozenberg, 24, son of David Rozenberg and Eszti Reisman of Ungvar. They had at least five children   who were born in Szobrancz before moving to Ungvar where Ignacz died in 1899.  Ferencz, the only son we know about, was born 15 September 1890 and may have died as a child because no other records have been found.  Terez was born in 1891 or 1892, Margit on 20 July 1891, Maria (Mariska) in 1892, and Anna (Chana) on 30 November 1892.  Sadly, it is only because of documentation that one of Ignacz’s nephews submitted to Yad Vashem that I learned about the fate of Josefina and her family.

My great-grandparents Miksa and Ottilie probably lived in Kereszt, south of Szobrancz.  This 1910 map also shows the Jewish cemetery south of Szobrancz komoro.
