Simply stated “Lawrence Nowlan uses the vocabulary of tradition to enliven the people and events of the present day.”  Mr. Nowlan imbues his work with a vitality which is rarely found in the monuments of the day. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Lawrence gained a great appreciation of public sculpture. The city known as America’s Paris houses perhaps the largest collection of public sculpture in the world and Mr. Nowlan has immersed himself amongst these masterpieces. Mr. Nowlan’s instinctual gifts combined with with his education and surroundings combine to manifest monumental sculpture which summon up all of the passions, joys and vices of life. The inspiration that he draws from the past above all Michelangelo and Rodin, flows through his own work to hopefully help fertilize the sculpture and minds of generations to come. Not only does Mr. Nowlan wrestle the clay into forms spiritual or psychological, but also has the capacity to materialize the most confused and contradictory passions of introspective reality into his monumental sculpture as well as his smaller bronze sculpture.
