Al Fenley’s Journal
USS Sicard, Aleutian Islands, Saturday 26 Sept 1942

…Last night just as I turned in and as I was about to fall into the arms of Morphia, I had a strange sensation. Half conscious, I could hear Iris whispering endearing terms in my ear and I actually felt her arms about me. It was satisfying and real; so much so that it seemed to me that I mumbled something back and cuddled down close to her.

How beautiful this mystery seemed to me, for I could not forget even this morning, the strange sensations I experienced.

All hands seem to have resigned themselves to their fate – an indefinite stay up here, on periphery of civilization. I’m sure we’ll all grow to appreciate the past when the future comes along.

At present we all are in good spirits. I’ve been able to get a lot of work done and all hands seem willing – after all, no place to go, no liberty! Life is sometimes like that out here.
A year before she died, Iris told her oldest daughter, Judith, “I have a feeling Al is remodeling another house for us. But it’s not quite ready yet.”

Three months later, an aneurysm burst in her head. After one month in the hospital and another in a rehab center, she moved in with my younger sister Gini and her husband Jerry Litzinger. We all were blessed with her presence for another 7 1/2 months.
