Sirens is an interactive computer piece built in Max/MSP (This composition does not feature any prerecorded sounds). I designed it to turn the guided improvisations of one female performer into a choir of sirens- sea nymphs from the greek mythology where as enchanting voices led sailors to their deaths.

The choir is generated through the use of multiple buffers that record the sounds of the solo performer. Then, the recorded sounds in the buffers are automatically altered using one or a combination of the following processes: pitch-shifting, time-shifting, delay and granularization.

Through processed improvised whispers, chromatic chants, and a creative reading of excerpts from John Milton’s “Sabrina Fair,” the performer will create the seductive and captivating song of these deadly sea nymphs.

Sirens was selected for performance in the following music festivals: Delta State’s Electro Acoustic Juke Joint (Nov. 2008), SEAMUS hosted by the University of Utah (Apr. 2008), Florida State’s CHASM (Mar. 2008), Florida International University’s FEASt (Feb. 2008), and EMM hosted by Kansas City Kansas Community College (Oct. 2007).

String Quartet No. 1 is a serial work in two contrasting movements. Both movements are loosely based on baroque forms. The first movement is a solemn choral with a delicate introduction featuring natural and artificial harmonics. It also includes an interlude featuring a cello solo and a short contrapuntal section that alludes to the second movement. After the interlude, the choral is presented in variation and is followed by a postlude featuring another “mist” of harmonics over an ostinato in the viola part.

The second movement is a humorous fugue with an additive and minimalistic introduction. The first violin begins the piece with a repeating chromatic motive, featuring offbeat rhythmic accents, that progressively becomes longer as the introduction unfolds. The second violin, then viola, and then the cello “enter the scene” with transposed versions of the first violin’s unfolding line. What emanates from these chromatic lines working against each other is a rhythmically complex cloud of movement. The fugue comes out through this cloudy introduction and propels the work into an unrelenting state of motion that does not let up until the last chord of the piece that ends the work in C major!

String Quartet No. 1 was selected for performance in the University of Miami’s Florida Composers Collaborative Concert (Apr. 2007).

Six Atmospheres is a theme and variations in which everything is varied including the twelve-tone theme of the piece. What holds the music together is the premise behind the way that the theme is varied. Each variation presents the theme in a different musical style or ambience.

Six Atmospheres was selected for performance in New World School of the Arts College Musician Showcase (Apr. 2004).

Lament of the Restless Spirits is a sectional musical narrative for processed voice (using Max/MSP) and video. It's text (an eclectic mix of images, from Guido
de Arezzo's “Ut queant laxis,” Francesco Petrarca's “Canzoniere” and Heideger's “Being and Time”) concludes in the contention that insomnia afflicts all sentient/goal oriented beings and that the only cure to this affliction is death.

Lament of the Restless Spirits was selected for performance in Florida International University’s FEASt (Nov. 2009) and in the Czech-American Summer Music Institute's Tři Koncerty at the Antonín Dvořak Museum in Prague, Czech-Republic (July 2009).
