Trench C for Caldarium

Today was fun. We (Trench C) found the rest of the curved wall which means we definitely have a bath complex. We also found a huge chunk of the rest of the lead pipe they found last year. I think trench A had to hold off digging because they had to figure out what was going on in their trench. The debate was whether a rock mass they had found was a collapsed wall or a road.  It began to pour around three so we had to pack up. It was an overall good day although it was tiring. It was soooo hot

Trench C throws a Curve

Trench C found another wall and part of it is curved. It seems to stop though which is really weird but Silvia was still happy. It was also Teddy’s birthday so we bought him a ice cream cake. Not much else except we got fried mozzarella balls with dinner which was a nice deviation from the normal bread/pasta/meat/fruit deal.

Valete

Today was low key. We all slept in. Some people went to mass up at the Duomo. Some went to go get food for lunch and drop Halyee and Aaron off. We all said goodbye, it’s weird thinking we might not ever see them again because we all got close during the last three weeks. Before dinner was nap time. We might go up to the city tonight, its dancing night again. I really want to go see the Vatican Museum but we might not get the chance to. Rachel said we’re supposed to see another city with

Field Trip

Ostia was wicked cool. Prof. George gave us an introduction to everything and then we all went exploring for ourselves. Scott, Zach, Dustin, Mary, Chris and I found some cave-ish things. We went looking for an underground chamber which was used in a mystery religion in ancient Ostia. We found it and it was really cool because there was a big statue of some guy (Mithras) about to slaughter a cow (bull). We also went “spelunking” also known as cave exploring because we found a back entrance into

Hot Times in Trench C

Today was the last day of work for Julia, Aaron and Haylee. It was also the first day I actually didn’t mind working. I got a lot of sleep last night and although it was hot out, I was just in a really good mood. Everyone else seemed to enjoy the day as well. Trench C found two walls and Scott found a corner of a new room which made Sylvia and Prof. George very happy. I went up to check out that bar they went to last night but there weren’t many people so Mary and I left. Supposedly a lot more

Leveling Experience

Colleen, Julia, Zach Bro, and I continued leveling a good section between the edge of the trench and one of the walls while the rest of trench C worked on revealing other walls and leveling other areas. Trench A found pieces of metal. Chris found a piece of a lamp that had hearts on it, it was really cool looking. We didn’t get rained out today in fact it was really hot and the majority of us got burned. It was Dr. Everman’s birthday so we had a special dessert and toast in her honor. After

Soprintendenta Visit

Today we kept digging. We found some bigger pieces of fresco and cleaned the walls. The superintendent came to inspect our site. We hope she liked it. It started to rain a bit around 3 so we had to stop for the day. It’s supposed to rain for the next two days as well from what I hear. Good thing about the rain though is that it cools it down because it gets really hot here. A bunch of us went up to the city to get some Chinese food for dinner. It was really good and inexpensive. A nice break
