The Sweet Life

Eventually, the turnpike will f@#$ you up. The more you take in, the more that comes out. Landfill, Miles Davis, Toxic Fumes and Nine Inch Nails don’t combine without a caustic reaction. Welcome to the new burn, Dave Corp.

Dave Corp’s The Sweet Life is the newest offering from Sluggo’s Goon Music. SGM is a NYC based record label/collective presenting original albums and live performances by a small group of musicians with select guests. The artists of the collective share their talents to bring a diverse and unique vision to every SGM release.

Heading up Dave Corp is classically trained keyboardist Dave Archer.   Most progressive/fusion music fans will have first encountered Dave on the first Sluggo’s release At War With Self - Acts of God.  Archer attended the New School in NYC studying with Junior Mance, Reggie Workman and Adam Holzman.

Archer’s partner in crime is drummer Matt Hankle, who quite literally ran away with the circus at 17. (His first professional gig was touring with Ringling Brothers!)  He escaped the Big Top for stints with Todd Rundgren and the band Fischerspooner. He’s played on Kaki King’s latest CD “Until We Felt Red” and did her subsequent tour along with Dave Archer on Keys. Matt’s currently performing as a member of the Blue Man Group as well.

Their influences are numerous, askew and barely recognizable. The music is a convergence of intellect, acerbity, and exploration. A New Sound from the Past. Industrial Jazz Rock. Nine Inch Nails meets fusion Miles, King Crimson meets Stevie Wonder, Eddie Van Halen castrates Medeski Martin and Wood with a rusty can.

On The Sweet Life the band, along with Mr. Grin on bass, solidify their peerless sound with screaming synths and mellow Rhodes piano. Drum and Bass interludes and Latin Funk. In the pocket and way out, all this noise came from a trio playing live in the studio. At times, the record screams at you and at others lulls you into a false sense of serenity. If you are sonically adventurous, you’ll be left exhausted and invigorated by the discovery of a new sound.

From Glenn Snelwar’s At War With Self to Dave Corp, Sluggo’s Goon Music proves their commitment to the mantra, “Bound by lack of Boundaries”.
