Slovak Keyboard for MacOS

Apple provides a "standard" Slovak keyboard as part of its Macintosh operating system. The standard keyboard can be hard to use, however, since many of the common Slovak characters require multiple keystrokes. I have developed a simplified keyboard that I think is easier to use. You can find the download and installation instructions for this keyboard here.

The following table gives the Slovak characters and the keystrokes required to produce them. In most cases, the marked Slovak character can be obtained by holding down the option key and typing the unmarked character. For example, you can get č by typing Option-c. Adding the shift key produces the upper case version (e.g., Option-Shift-c will produce Č.)

There are three characters that could take either of two diacritical marks. In these cases, the main key gives the acute mark, and a nearby key gives the alternate diacritical mark. For example Option-o gives ó and Option-p gives ó.

Here is what the keyboard layout looks like with Option key pressed:

This keyboard was developed with the assistance of Ukelele, the Mac OS X Keyboard Layout Editor, available from SIL International.
