Ode to a Broken Umbrealla...

The Backstory...

Kimmy, Beth, and I woke up to a torrential downpour one morning in during our stay in Venice. We still had lots to see, and so packed our bags and headed out the door for the day. The concierge  handed us 2 “Hotel Orion” umbrellas. Our umbrellas appeared to be structurally sound, but as we were coming back from L´Accademia, Kim´s umbrella broke, and she got rather drenched. We stopped for lunch in a fun little pizzeria and began talking about the sad fate which had befallen her umbrella. The inspiration for this ode came directly, and I wrote the whole thing out on our place-mat at the restaurant. :)

Ode to a broken umbrella

Thou wingéd shield, which
me, from the elements an oath hath sworn
to protect- hath sampled treason
springing forth without command...

whilst I, bewildered, in a wetted state
stand aghast at thy belligerent betrayal.
My own, my dear guardian
hath, by thine own faulty design
left me drenchéd and vulnerable.

What shall my course be? To,
like a jilted lover, search anew
and hope to find what I had lost
or- endeavor to mend that, which
had been my constant companion.

Though thou hast forsaken me,
I shall not part with thee so easily, nor
shall I look for that which I shall never find...
But will carry on, hoping for change...

Thou wast not made to bend and break,
like a bark among the rocks
but, rather, to be steadfast and strong
shielding me from that which would
rain down upon me...

I shall not give thee up...not yet.
Love is made of stronger stuff, and
thus, iron-like I cling to you
hoping that you will become, once more,
the waterproof equrry I was given this morning.
