Beginning of the End

A lot has happened since the last time I wrote but the biggest was probably the losing of one foster son and the gaining of another.

My wife and I have been trying to have children for quite a while with many ups and downs but no success. Finally we decided to become foster parents with the hope of adopting one or more of the children we would foster.

Back in August of 2006 we finally had our first long-term placement. Trey was born four weeks premature and had some other issues that kept him in an institution for the first three weeks of his life, but then at 23 days he was placed with us. He was the sweetest and cutest baby, and everyone was surprised when we told them he was a foster child because he looked so much like us. His parents weren’t good candidates for taking care of him and we had hopes of being able to keep him forever. Unfortunately for us, it turns out that the father had relatives who would make a good family for him and so, a little less than six months after we first got Trey, we had to give him up.

On the same day that we took Trey to live with his new family, we received a phone call telling us about another child, Carlito. He was two months premature and had to be airlifted to Childrens Hospital when he was born. He was nearly nine months old and had recovered from most of his issues and now needed placement in a permanent home.

Renee and I had not planned to take any foster children for a couple months after losing Trey, but we decided we would try an overnight visit. Well, his current foster mother brought him over on Friday with a plan of leaving him for the weekend--but she brought all his clothes and toys and in fact all her baby stuff because she was getting out of foster care (8 years and 48 children later). Needless to say, we kept him.
