Don Wright’s Dive Locker - Welcome

In January of 2007, I retired from my position as Chancellor Professor of Marine Science, Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), College of William and Mary in Virginia where I also served for nine years as Dean of Marine Science and Director of VIMS. Throughout my 40+ year career as a geological and physical oceanographer, I remained active as a scientific  and recreational diver.  Since retiring, I have focused on two vocational goals: (1) to promote and facilitate shared and integrated approaches to coastal science by the science community at large; and (2) to continue diving and pass on my love of diving to both younger and older generations. I am addressing goal (1) by serving part time as Director of Coastal Research with the Southeastern Universities Research Association (SURA).  To address goal (2), I became an open water SCUBA instructor in teaching status with PADI. I am available to offer individualized training, touring or continuing marine science education on a private basis.  I am particularly sensitive to the needs and constraints of older divers and I believe that diving can be enjoyed for life and by all generations. I once had a great 100 foot wreck dive with a buddy 89 years old.  Let’s dive!
Florida’s crystal clear springs (left and upper middle panels above) offer superb venues for all levels of dive training as well as for exploration by certified divers. The wrecks (right panels) and reefs on the continental shelf are equally spectacular.  As an independent SCUBA instructor and marine scientist I (lower middle panel) will tailor training programs or tours to suit individual interests. Of course, for dive training, PADI standards and performance requirements must be  adhered to. But the pace is flexible.
Personalized diver and marine environmental education for individuals, small teams and clubs.
