Discussion Tips - How to ‘wow’ your teacher with impressive subject area conversation.
When your teacher sets up a class discussion, consider the use of the following techniques to participate in the discussion. Participate in the discussion by responding to fellow students’ statements. Don’t let the teacher be the leader of the discussion. You, as an engaged student, can be a discussion leader by asking questions. Even if you don’t know a lot about the subject, you can participate by asking questions and following the tips below. You will learn a lot and your teachers will be impressed.
Ask a responding student for more information, demand evidence by asking for specific examples.
Press for clarification. Ask the responding student to give more details to their statement or to be more specific in the language used.
Ask for justification. Ask the student to tell you where they found the information or how they know what they said.
Disagree with the student if you don’t think they are right. State that you don’t agree and justify your answer with facts and details.
