Basic Math Course of Study

Math Requirements for Graduation

All students who receive a diploma must earn a total of four (4) math credits.  The math coursework must include an Algebra credit which can be met with Algebra or the combination of Algebra 1A and Algebra 1B.

Algebra 1A / Algebra 1B - A combination of two courses which is typically taught to ninth and tenth graders.  The two courses together meet the Algebra requirement and earn 2 of the required math credits.

Algebra 2 - A continuation of the Algebra concepts with some inclusion of geometry.  For students in the general math sequence, Algebra 2 is taken by seniors.

General Math Course of Study

Algebra 1 - An Algebra course which stands alone to meet the required Algebra credit.  Typically, students with strong basic skills takes Algebra 1 as a ninth grader.

Geometry - A geometry course which utilized geometry concepts to include formal proofs and application. Typically, students who have Algebra 1 requirement met with strong basic skills are prepared for Geometry.

Algebra 2 - A continuation of the Algebra concepts with some inclusion of geometry.  Algebra 2 is taken by sophomore or juniors who have have completed Algebra 2 and are preparing for Pre-Calculus leading to Calculus.

Pre-Calculus - An advanced course which combines the algebra and geometry concepts with introduction to calculus concepts.  Pre-Calculus is typically taken by Seniors.

Note:  **Some students will take an accelerated coursework in math, doubling up in a year so that they are prepared to take AP Calculus during the senior year.

Informal Geometry - A basic geometry course which provides a practical utilization of geometry concepts.  It is typically taught to eleventh graders who have completed the Algebra 1A / Algebra 1B coursework for Algebra. This course does not meet Bright Futures requirements.
