About the Jurors - Painting with Fire: Wood Fire Ceramics

Robert Barron

Born into a pottery family in Croydon, Victoria, Robert has been fully engaged in clay since he was 19. His love for clay then took him for 5 years on a journey from Australia to New Zealand, North America, Europe and South Korea. Returning to Australia in 1984, he established Gooseneck Pottery at Kardella, Victoria and with the assistance of a Crafts Board grant built a 1000 cubic ft five-chambered woodfired kiln. Influenced by the philosophies of Bernard Leach and Michael Cardew, and with a passion for the pots made by traditional crafts people throughout the world, he has pushed exploration of techniques such as repositioning a 50 lb vessel in the pulsing heat of the firebox at peak temperatures to achieve multi- directional ash markings.

Hiroshi Ogawa

Hiroshi Ogawa started making pottery in 1959 at U.C. Santa Barbara. Graduated in 1963 and taught pottery from 1965 –1968. Went to Japan in 1969 to study Buddhism and pottery. Studied at a pottery co-operative under Azuma, Ken sensei from 1970 to 1972. Returned to the United States and set up a studio in Carmel Valley, CA in 1974. Moved to Elkton, OR in 1981 and set up present studio, Ogawa Pottery. Built a two chambered ana-nobori style woodfire kiln and christened it “Hikarigama” (the illuminated kiln).

Tom Rohr

Tom Rohr has been firing with wood for the past twenty years.  Self taught in the practice of Woodfiring, he has experience with low-fire Roman arch style kilns, fast-fire kilns, bourri-style kilns, train kilns, Noborigama, and Anagama.  He currently teaches Ceramics at Lane Community College in Eugene and runs and operates Pleasant Hill Pottery with his wife, Kathryn Finnerty.  He has worked and fired kilns in Michigan, Montana, Colombia S.A. Barcelona, Alaska, Banff, Winnipeg, Washington, and now in Oregon where he continues to explore the color pallette that wood has to offer his functional pots and sculptures.
