upcoming events, shows, collaborations, and records of shows long since past...
2005- Parallel Universe Theory is quickly replacing the String Theory. Come see what this could mean for time travel. This ballet is inspired and based on the story of John Titor, the time traveller.
First Aid Kits and Water Purification Tablets for everyone!
2005- For Caitlyn's birthday month, she put on a one-woman ballet tribute to Sammy Davis, Jr. in the courtyard of the L.A.C.E. Theater. (That meant no singing.... no tap dancing... curious, eh?!) Donned in a yellow tutu and at some points wearing a hat and dancing with a cane, she melded as appropriately as she could pinatas, birthday cake, presents, pointe shoes, and Sammy under the stars... The show culminated with Sammy Davis, Jr.'s rendition of "MacArthur Park" as it suddenly rained on a green cake and the lights went out, though the party had just begun! The audience received birthday presents at the door and everyone enjoyed birthday cake afterwards.
2005- In celebration of 50 fabulous years, Caitlyn performed a very special one night only, one-woman tribute to the two green characters who have shaped and changed all of our lives. The show was for subscribers only and featured a "green" version of dancing with paints. Dancing frogs were given to subscribers.
2005- One of the original favorites of the L.A.C.E. Theater, this show explores the dark side of the Camarillo State Hospital. It is a one-woman, site-specific, dance/seance atop a giant Quija board and at some points in absolute darkness. This show is not for the faint of heart! But not to worry, you will be smoked with sage upon arrival and before departure in an attempt to protect and cleanse you of any bad spirits. Handwriting analysis will be offered and spooks will definitely materialize! As a matter of fact, they always do!
2005- For one night only... dusted off the freezer burn and served up the same show as last year. (In which a fruitcake is baked on stage during the performance.) As always punch, fish stew, and a freshly baked fruitcake were served up afterwards for the L.A.C.E. Theater Christmas party.
2006-The first act was done in a condensed one-woman version of the classical entirety and during intermission, the audience voted on a newer (perhaps improved) version to watch for the second half of the evening. Based on the audience's suggestions, Caitlyn selected music on the spot and improvised an entirely new version of the original. Audience members received Valentine programs and boxes of chocolates at the door. The whole theater smelled like roses! Love. Death. Classic. Modern. Tragic. Bliss.
2006- Return of the Radioactive Turtle Soldier!! A murder mystery ballet sequel! Featuring the world-famous 3D Turtle Dance! Have you ever heard of such things?
2006- The newest prevailing theory in physics and the big bang gets a dance spin. The L.A.C.E. Theater was the first to bring you both "String Theory" and "Parallel Universe Theory" - accept no substitutions! “M-Theory was no different! Audience members were educated through culture as well as given m&m's at the door!
2006- A benefit for Marta Becket and her Amargosa Opera House. all attendees were encouraged to wear RED SHOES and the evening *feetured* a silent auction of artwork, delicious food donated by Guido’s in Malibu, red fruit punch, as well as a live “dancing with paints” performance with LA band Potions Made by Children.
The painting was in all red paints!
2006- One year after Hurricane Katrina, this show was produced to raise funds for an individual whom Caitlyn saw as a guardian angel of the Lower 9th Ward: Charmaine Neville. All blue paints were used and the entire evening of dance was set to music by Neville. 100% of the money raised from the several nights this show ran were sent directly to Neville in the Lower 9th Ward, New Orleans.
People were encouraged to make offerings to voo doo shrines, wear mardi gras beads, sit under the moon, and buy paintings!
There are several paintings still available from this event if you are interested in supporting a tremendous woman!
2006- A patient at a mental hospital has a breakdown after learning the truth about her lover. Elements of Voo Doo and the classical ballet Giselle were combined to create a haunting narrative that took place both inside and within a locked courtyard of the old abandoned Camarillo State Hospital. Audience members followed her story: watched her rise and fall within the old walls.
This show closed the L.A.C.E. Theater on October 28, 2006.
RIP
2007 - For her 25th birthday she decided to (of course) dance with paints, but to make it a milestone show with room for growth! Age 25 is ACT I, age 50 will be ACT II, age 75 will be ACT III, and her funeral or 100th birthday (whichever comes first) will be the final ACT: ACT IV. Every ACT will *feeture* the same canvas that she started with at age 25. Upon the final ACT those who have seen all shows and had their tickets “stamped” at each will win the prize of her... Her Life’s Work. Each 25 years will represent where she is at that point in time and all that has influenced her to that point. Audience members were able to purchase copies of her narrative of age 0-25.
2002- A blank canvas for a stage floor, some buckets of paint, and feet used as paint brushes.
Audience members receive “Splatter Protection Ponchos”
Of all the shows, this one is still produced and runs on a consistent basis- in fact it now has it’s own website! www.dancingwithpaints.com
2003- This show explored the haunted history of the old Camarillo State Hospital from inside the iron bars for a mystifying site-specific, one-of-a-kind, one-woman dance experience... and included palm reading, handwriting analysis, meds, juice, and jello.
2003- This was a show set-out to battle that beloved holiday classic: The Nutcracker. It was heavy, dark, twisted, Germanic, and produced a real fruitcake by the show's end. It sent shockwaves through the holiday dance-show tastebuds...
2004- A twisted murder mystery ballet. One of four identical sisters was murdered in her laboratory. The plot thickened as we learned more about each of her sisters. But as the title suggested.. there was a TWIST!
2004- A blindfold, a dance floor painted with every letter of the alphabet, a record of every letter landed on at each dance's end, tacks scattered across the floor, and even some barefoot dancing atop strewn razor blades. In the end the random letters landed on formed stock pick buys and sells. Performed on Tax Day- free of charge.
2004- An abstract ballet that explored the world of the very big and the world of the very small. Kids received silly string.
The same week this show premiered, Stephen Hawking announced that String Theory was the best current theory to explain the Universe- in fact better than his own.
2004-La Bayadere meets the Hawaiian legend of Pele. This courtyard production explores love & drama, death & the Underworld, rebirth & revenge, volcanoes & rain, tiki gods & evil-doers, pointe shoes & tutus... and a little bit of hula. Featuring Colleen Ford & Theodore Manx. Everyone gets a coconut, a lei, and a pre-performance slideshow presentation.
2004-The fear of soul dancing. A girl locked up in a ward falls asleep only to leave her body and explore her dancing dreams while her Id, Ego, and Superego look on from the audience. The dance (with paints) left a giant inkblot on the stage floor for the audience to examine for themselves at shows end.. Audience members were encouraged to make their own "Psychic Energy Protection Hats" out of aluminum foil before entering the theater, as well as wash their hands and pick a comfort toy.
2004-For one night only, audience members helped channel the spirit of Swiss-born dancer Trudi Schoop who once worked within the very same Camarillo State Hospital in which this site specific performance/seance took place. The room was locked, audience members received flashlights, Polaroids exposed ghost writing, and questions for Trudi were answered through automatic writing. Participants went home with early trick-or treat bags and chilled expressions on their faces.
2005-The audience got to be a Hollywood focus group. They watched the first half in it's classical entirety and during intermission, decided (among other things) whether they wanted the swan to live or die. Each night had a different second act which the audience controlled.
2005- A murder took place within the asylum over 50 years ago and ever since then a woman in white has restlessly haunted the corridors. The audience was asked to unravel the mystery to finally put her spirit to rest. Each audience member received a "Whodunit Ballot" and a "magni-vision detecto-lens." Sleuthing ensued.
2006- It all started when Caitlyn was 3 and a half... Tap and ballet at Al Gilbert’s in Beverly Hills. Say the name of that school to anyone who grew up in LA and they know what you’re talking about! Her very first recital *feetured* her and her class as “Dancing Poodles.” Both her and her good friend in the class Melody Aushenker recreated the performance for video at the time which managed to survive... and haunt them! 20 years later they reunited in Hollywood and recreated the dance where it all started for friends and family. Yes, it was ridiculous... but when was it not?! We’d like to hope we’ve done the late and great Mr. Al Gilbert proud! And of course, we’ll do it again when given the chance... after all the lyrics are so infectious... “I am a dancing poodle, laughing dancing poodle!.. Hop, hop, hop on my two back feet, Gee that music is really neat...” And all those “wiggle wiggle wiggles!”
2005- A ten minute choreography study that later became the L.A.C.E. production: “Zombie Giselle”
2007/08 - A recycled billboard and four dancers with paint on their feet... took the backside of this billboard to a whole other level; a live performance set to the live musical styling of The Good Listeners at the Eco-LA Gallery. After the dancers and their painting feet were done, energetic artist GENE painted their figures atop their scuff marks. Then about a month later, the billboard was re-hung on Hollywood Blvd. just one block from Caitlyn’s grandfather’s star on the Walk of Fame!
40,000 people/day saw this billboard.
After a month nearly 1,000,000 had!

With layers of plastic revealing and hiding the secrets of the universe, blind-folded backwards live piano playing to represent our approach to figuring “it” all out, and an endless array of lights, music, and dance to help explore the concepts that puzzle us all!
Audience members received bubbles.
2008 - An attempt on Halloween night to channel at least one of the many ghosts said to haunt the grounds of Cal Lutheran University. Through Carradine’s own version of a trance-inducing dance atop an 11'x14' spirit board, she will alternately dip her feet in paint and act as a medium to better realize another form of communication from the other side. Imagine what can be seen in the smear of dancing footprints that might otherwise go unnoticed. Viewers are urged to use the Ouija-like map of the customized spirit board to help track messages via live overhead projection. Explore a layer of the world beyond our own through this mystifying site-specific one-of-a-kind one-woman dance experience. Unless you're afraid of the DARK!
Warning: May be too intense for small children.
2008 - Picture two dancers with paint all over their feet trapped behind glass in the display windows of an abandoned building in transition in Downtown Los Angeles. Now, imagine it’s part of the monthly Art Walk, add music, lots of spectators, the chill of the winter air, projected images, beautiful lights, dancing bodies... bliss!!!!
Thursday Nov. 13, 2008 from 6-10pm dancers Caitlyn Carradine and Nicole Dionne will be on display in the Rowan Building at the South East corner of 5th & Spring.
