It’s really not much of a river - at least, not in terms of relative size or international fame. In fact, unless you have lived in or visited this part of the world in Central Washington State, you’ve probably never heard of the Yakima River. It’s just one of many thousands like it across the country, but to us it’s unique and very special. We grew up fishing in, floating on, irrigating from, and constantly admiring her never-ending flow of gorgeous blue water, which sparkles like endless diamonds in the sunlight. To anyone who enjoys her vast resources the Yakima is an awesome river, full of beauty and teeming with life.

That’s pretty much how a church should be described as well, don’t you think? The Body of Christ, full of beauty and teeming with life. Ideally, a church should be a safe place... a place to dialogue and search for the answers to life’s many profound questions. It should be a place of warmth, acceptance, and hospitality... a place of simple love, a place where people of all backgrounds are encouraged to contemplate how and why the world exists, and how in the world (pardon the pun) we humans fit into the whole cosmic scenery.

Is there a god? If yes, can he or she be known? How can we be sure? What exactly is expected of us... and what are our resources for this crazy world? What happens to us when we die anyway? Does a heaven and/or hell exist... or are they just made-up places invented by fundamentalist extremists? Are humans designed as eternal beings, or are we a byproduct of incomprehensible mathematic formulations and biological tissue? Could these mysterious issues ever be reconciled... even remotely? What religion, if any, is real and true? Why should I care?

For God’s sake... What exactly IS the meaning of life?

Those kinds of questions are just part of why we’ve formed a new kind of church in Ellensburg, Washington. Oh, there are already plenty of churches in the Kittitas Valley, most of which are sufficiently good and healthy places of Christ-centered worship. But we at The River are seeking to reach out to those who aren’t necessarily part of any church community.

You’re welcome to join us in this new venture and help us re-imagine church. We can’t promise you perfection... not even close. Let’s face it, whenever people gather with other people (especially to talk about politics or religion?) sparks do  sometimes fly... But hey, that’s part of what it means to be human, right? However, we want to do more than talk... we want to make a positive impact in the Kittitas Valley and the world... so as we seek to be formed in the image of Jesus Christ, we will also seek to be...
