Arrested For Being Brown?

Wednesday, December 19, 2007

A man with the pink handcuffs used by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, leans out of a Sheriff’s Dept. van in Phoenix Wednesday. The man was taken into custody, along with several other Latinos, during an immigrant rights march that started at Pruitt’s Furniture and went to city hall, downtown.

About 85 people marched the eight miles from Pruitt’s  to city hall to protest the Sheriff’s practice of arresting illegal immigrants and to discourage the city of Phoenix Police Department from enacting a similar, if somewhat less draconian, policy.

The Sheriff’s Department has been arresting people suspected of being in the US without legal documents. They skulk around the periphery of immigration protests stopping people, usually for minor traffic offenses, and ask about their immigration status. If the folks turn out to be illegal they are arrested. Deputies arrested at least five people Wednesday.
