The Baan Unrak Children’s Home in Sangklaburi, Thailand, near the Burmese border, cares for more than 100 Burmese children and women. Most of the children live at the home and go the school the home operates. Some of the youngsters are orphans, victims of civil strife in Burma (Myanmar) or HIV or any of the myriad other illnesses common in the remote area.
The home was founded in 1991 when Didi Devamala, who was working on an agricultural project in the area, was asked to care for one child. Seventeen years later, she has more than 100 children, a school and shops. And, sadly, the need keeps growing.
