In June of 2006, a jury for the DC Commission On the Arts & Humanities selected me as one of three semi-finalists to sculpt FREDERICK DOUGLASS. This bronze is one of two being commissioned to represent the District in the US Capitol. I didn’t win the commission, but had an intensely focused summer completing the 24” plaster maquette required for the August presentation. The kids helped when possible, and went on research field trips as an unexpected alteration to our previously scheduled Summer Reporter’s project.
