My Life What’s on my mind My first musical experience was playing Cello in 4th grade. I played the Cello for a couple of years, but realized that playing the Cello didn’t allow me to play the type of music I enjoyed listening to. Tyler Porter brought his guitar over to my house one day and after picking around on it for a while, I knew that's the instrument I wanted to play. My first guitar was from my grandparents for Christmas, a "Wal-Mart" acoustic, and my sister bought me a month of guitar lessons with Brad Thompson, who I have studied with for the last 5 years. I heard about the BluesEd program in 2001 and invited Tyler to come and check it out with me, and we met Eva for the first time. There were only the 3 of us for the first 3 years, but by the 4th year, we wanted to start a real band. I knew, Will, Pat, and Sarah from school, and knew they were fellow musicians, so Tyler and I immediately recruited them for BluesEd and our new band, The Side Effects. The BluesEd program has been a great experience with opportunities to learn from all kinds of musicians. It really made me realize that there are tons of genres of music out there. Some of my big influences would have to be Slash (Guns n' Roses), Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Jimi Hendrix, Angus Young (AC-DC), Eddie Van Halen, and of course, The Beatles! Matt
