UPDATE - Merle has made a playmate for his original Jagdpanther. The new version is a night vision version seen below.
Again the armor vehicle skunk works has created another labor of love.
What started as a Heng Long Tiger I has been converted to a Jagdpanther Sdkfz-173.
Ok that said, lets get down to the nutz and bolts. The first step was to locate a suitable set of patterns for the Jagdpanther. Again I followed the same process that worked for my Ferdinand, that is I located a paper model of the Jagdpanther in 1/25th scale and then scaled the paper model to the tank chassis that I wished to donate for the project. Once I was satisfied that the patterns were sized to my liking, I decided to try and do the upper hull construction from plastic-card instead of wood on this project.
The Jagdpanther patterns were scaled to the length of the Tiger Track units that is from the front edge of the drive sprocket to the rear edge of the idler wheel which is why the project looks correct even though the Panther chassis is actually slightly shorter. Once the correct tracks, road wheels and drive sprockets are installed the difference will be hardly noticeable.
The HL Tiger chassis was donated from a working and battle tested HL Tiger, so all that is really needed to be done was to build the upper hull and then make the necessary modifications to the chassis in order to match everything up. The bow armor plate on the chassis was cut away and replaced with a plastic card piece to better match up to the new hull design. The rear HL Pantiger bulkhead with the exhaust stacks was installed and then trimmed to fit to the new engine deck and new storage bins were installed. The fenders were constructed from heavy card-stock
The actual Jagdpanther had a long 88 mm L43 main gun installed, the same as the Ferdinand, so I have managed to acquire a suitable main gun along with the recoil motor from the Tamiya KT. I also used the Tamiya KT main gun mounting with some slight alterations. The Jagdpanther features main gun elevation and recoil, a TANKHOBBY Combat Circuit and a Tamiya TBU. The detail parts were provided by a HL Pantiger that was acquired for the purpose. The chassis has been upgraded to the metal gear boxes and metal tracks. Track power control provided by a Sabretooth 2x10 dual ESC, motors are stock HL.
The actual Jagdpanther is classed as a Medium Tank Destroyer so the combat circuit settings are 5 hits to destroy and 9 seconds between rounds fired.
UPDATE - My first Jagdpanther is now complete and operational with the addition of the Flame Shroud exhaust pipes from the Tamiya Panther Kit. Also, the mobility issues have been resolved by removing the El-Mod electronics and reinstalling the Sabertooth 2x10 dual ESC. My second Jagdpanther, complete with night fighting camo and “Vampir” IR system
