KRYSTAL RYPIEN
My research addresses the ecology of microbe-invertebrate interactions, ranging from pathogens to symbionts. I am currently a postdoctoral researcher at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, where I study ecological interactions within coral-associated bacterial communities. Previous research has examined the origins and spread of a fungal pathogen (Aspergillus sydowii) in Caribbean gorgonian coral communities. Overall, my research combines molecular, ecological, microbiological, chemical, and natural history approaches to address the diverse roles of microorganisms in marine ecosystems, and how disturbance mediates interactions between the micro- and macro-scale.
