8.26.06: DoubleheadeR = Rock Stars
DoubleheadeR = Rock Stars

I typically don’t watch TV. I’m just not home enough to watch any show consistently and my attention span is just too damn short to care. But I sure as hell watch Entourage. I have the first two seasons on DVD and this summer I have had a weekly routine. By Thursday I am beginning to count down the days until the next episode. By Friday I’m thinking more about Entourage than what I want to do that weekend. And every Sunday there are anywhere from 5 to 15 twentysomethings gathered in my friend’s basement to watch the show.

Except last Sunday I did the unthinkable and skipped. Instead, I went to the Crazy Donkey in Farmingdale to catch DoubleheadeR’s EP release show.

This wasn’t a total shot in the dark. I had seen DH play in the corner of their local hole in the wall bar earlier this summer. The bar didn’t even have a stage but the local kids loved them and jumped around, and I was impressed.

The Crazy Donkey is a legitimate concert venue though. I wondered if they could harness the same energy in a larger space. And due to the Entourage conflict I would have been quite pissed if it sucked. It definitely did not.

DoubleheadeR took the stage at 10 PM, about the same time the Entourage crew would be stepping out of the vintage car that was never seen in any episode. The four members of DH stepped out just as confidently, launching into the energetic “Look Out Below!” from their just released EP.

They never let up from there. The crowd jumped around like they were at a Taking Back Sunday show. The singer jumped around like he owned the stage. Both sides met as stage diving and crowd surfing commenced.

Personally, I love going to concerts where I’m extremely familiar with the band. I’m a lyrics person and I love to sing along. Consequently, I hate going to punk shows where I don’t know the lyrics, because the barrage of guitars using makes hearing them sung impossible. DoubleheadeR had no such problem. Songs I knew were delivered with same crispness and songs I did not, and the barrage of guitars were most definitely still there.

In the end I came to the show liking the band and ended up a huge fan. They reminded me of one of my old favorites, The Movielife. I picked up the EP, titled Commit Your Lies to Suicide. I couldn’t buy a T-Shirt because they were sold out.

These guys are unsigned as of now, but they should not remain that way. Their live act is one of the best rock star performances I’ve seen since Head Automatica last January. Their lyrics and melodies are on point. Their guitarist is sick - Just listen to the EP intro I have streaming below. They are more original than most of the punk on MTV and just as addictive. I’m already anxiously awaiting the full album.

All in all, DoubleheadeR’s set proved to me they were rock stars. It was a good night.

PS - I made it home at 12:58 to catch the 1 AM Entourage rerun. It was an excellent night.
