“Seeing Red”
6 x 6” oil on masonite

In all my hours spent
observing people in art
museums, I've come to
realize it's somewhat
predictable who will be
drawn to what. Men
gravitate to structures.
Women gravitate to
emotional pieces. Men
generally admire the
technical aspects of a
painting or sculpture -
while women seem to
respond to color. Like
this canvas painted red.
I wondered if it was the
color itself - red is brave.
Sexual. Appetizing.
Also the color of lipsticks
and nail polish.
I'd guess it meant different things to different people - and quite honestly, to me, it was a large canvas painted red.

I lost a dear friend this weekend.  Someone I look up to.....admire. She filled that void that was left when my dad died - she became my guide. The one you go to when your life is at a crossroad. She was strong and I became stronger because of her. She had this great way of telling you to think things through, just by the lift of an eyebrow. She’s a large part of why I pursued painting again. She encouraged me to paint more - to never stop. The last thing she wrote to me was “Please, continue on, creating beauty, what a wonderful legacy.”  I will do just that, my friend.
