A GREAT CITY, AN INNOVATIVE PROGRAM

Spain’s third largest city, with a metropolitan population of 2 million, is a magnificent union of old and new.  A coastal Mediterranean city with a rich history, Roman, Greek, and Moorish remnants, renowned cuisine, and celebrations and festivals throughout the year, Valencia also boasts the world-renowned City of Arts and Sciences, a modern-day architectural masterpiece featuring the Planetarium, the Palace of Arts, the Oceanographic Park, and the Museum of Science.  Located 200 miles south of Barcelona, Valencia is a perfect hub for visiting Mediterranean destinations.  Valencia exhibits the best of Spanish character in a pleasant, safe, and modern Mediterranean city.

In addition, all students will spend one week in Portugal, the place where globalization began.  This Portugal component adds a valuable comparative aspect to the course.  Finally, the program includes the hotel train from Lisbon to Madrid, and several days in the Spanish capital.

The Valencia Program offers two tracks of study.  All students will take a course on the History, Identity, and Soccer of Spain and Portugal.  The students will choose a second course on either Mediterranean Ecology (Biology credit) or the Political Economy of Development (INTA credit).  This innovative program allows for total group of about 20 students, along with a small and intense elective class with approximately 10 students each.  The basic program lasts 6 weeks.  Students will also have an option of staying up to 10 weeks and earning 9 credit hours.  In addition, students can study intensive Spanish for 4 weeks at the University of Valencia.  The ten-week option is suitable for the International Plan program at Georgia Tech.

The program is directed by Georgia Tech faculty Dr. Kirk Bowman and Dr. Terry Snell, who have led over a dozen summer study abroad programs.  We invite you to consider this program for Summer 2010 by following the links at the top of the page!
