How our lives are different (and 4 month checkup)

How is it that you show up for a Christmas party (food and drink IN HAND) on the WRONG day?!?! Well.... let me tell you. I suppose it all started when we decided to give birth to twins about 5 months ago.  It happened to us last weekend, and honestly, I’m quite surprised that it was the first time something like that happened.  My awesome (and extremely gracious) sister volunteered to babysit for us, so Kevin and I could enjoy a nice “adults only” evening out with friends.  We fed and put the babies down for the night, and Kevin and I headed out the door about 8pm - with some beer and a homemade Krispy Kreme bread pudding.  We show up to the house, don’t knock, and just head right in (as is customary with this group of friends.)  Needless to say, we were WAY overdressed for the party that wasn’t happening.  I’ll spare the details of the entire story - but we ended up hanging out with our friends (who were recovering from their raging party the night before), and had a few beers while watching the football game. (us - in a cocktail dress and a suit, and them - in pajamas... literally).  Unbelievable.  There are probably two types of reactions to this story.... those that say “yep, yep.... totally... I have done the same thing” .  I will call Group A “Parents”.  Then there is Group B, who we will call “Uneducated on child rearing”.  Group B, you can laugh for a few more minutes... perhaps silently to yourselves, so that you aren’t bugged by others to inform them on the story to which you are laughing.  And then... when you’re done laughing, swear to yourself that you will never bring this story up to us again.  We were very nice by sharing it with you in the first place.  Ok moving on.

We had the babies’ 4 months checkup on December 11th, and the babies were actually 4 1/2 months... but I’m just obsessive over their ages like that.  Mallory weighed 14 lbs, 1 oz, and Taylor was 13 lbs, 1o oz - in the 50th and 25th percentiles, respectively.  Our little Taylor is still below average weight... but that’s where he started almost 5 months ago... so the doctors are very pleased with his weight gain.  They had more shots, and behaved quite nicely considering.  We also got the “go ahead” to start experimenting with solids.  And by “experimenting” I mean that the babies will still be primarily breast fed, but after some feedings, we can let them try some new foods.  Our pediatrician suggested that we start with squash, sweet potatoes, and carrots - instead of the traditional cereal.  He had his many reasons, and after looking at his curriculum vitae which included something about being on the forefront of pediatric nutrition, I thought it would be best for us to listen to him.  (plus... spoon feeding squash is WAY more exciting than rice cereal in a bottle. BOOOOO.) We’ll keep you posted as to how that will go... we’re still holding out for a little longer.  Perhaps it will be a nice Christmas present for the babies.  (and I’m sure the aftereffect will be two nice “little Christmas presents” for mommy and daddy.)  Mmmm... I can’t wait. (sarcasm.... extreme sarcasm.)

The babies will go back to the doctor for their 6 month appointment... which is currently scheduled for February 12th.
