Soybean farmer, Terry Lieb, purchased his first “buffalo” seven years ago, just to have one roaming his farm near Monticello, in Piatt County. Through the Environmental Incentives Program, he took 60 acres out of crop production and returned it to pasture. He now has about 20 head and a side business of bison meat products.
Bison are the only “cattle” native to North America and it is estimated
they numbered 40-60 million in the 1700’s, dwindling to 1,000 by the
late 1800’s. They were saved from extinction and today there are more than 350,000 head in North America.
