“When I discovered Calligraphy in college, I had no idea or plan where it would take me. In the next 15 years I perfected a method of teaching myself a very basic approach to making the letters with a few common, repeated strokes. Each stroke was...and is....easy. It is an ACQUIRED SKILL. You need NOT have artistic talent or even legible handwriting.

Then, as if by some divine plan, which I’m quite certain it was, into my life came the dental drill in late 1992. Again, I had no idea the potential of the tool combined with nice lettering or where this new path might lead. Everyone I knew of, or had ever heard of, used a dental drill for for teeth! Then, I learned a great number of people used it for engraving artwork in wood and glass. I'm not an artist, beyond lettering, so that part didn't appeal to me.

Over the next 11 months I became obsessed with the drill. I spent most waking hours experimenting and teaching myself a whole new world of hand-lettering. When I learned how to use the drill for personalization, I discovered a literal gold mine.  I average about 40 events annually beginning with Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Christmas. Sprinkled in among those are special events individual stores schedule where I might be there during a Trends Festival, a style show, and events where the store might schedule hundreds of appointments for women to come for a makeover. They eventually get over to my table and discover I’m Engraving fragrance bottles, compacts, makeup brushes. Then they spend more!

When I’m not doing events, I’m busy in my studio working for the public doing a wide variety of items from golf clubs to fine crystal...and an occasional fishing reel or gold bracelet!GAIL_BROWN_PAGE.htmlshapeimage_11_link_0
