When Thomas Jefferson composed the Declaration of Independence on the writing desk above, it probably never occurred to him that people would protest homosexuality at funerals. A jury said “Rev.” Fred Phelps must cough up almost $11 million judgment based upon a privacy lawsuit filed by a soldier’s family who felt emotional distress from the “God hates fags” crew. Phelps plans an appeal.
I revere the First Amendment. I have been devastated and sobbing at funerals. If Phelps’ crew ever shows up when I am at a funeral, then my husband will have to bail me out of jail. On second thought, he, too, would be charged with assault. Better have a dog sitter on retainer.
