My knee’s been messed up and I’m suppose to ice my back (yes, that kind of makes sense) and my knee three times a day. I recently realized the wonder of using saran wrap to keep the ice on my knee, which is a miracle that keeps it in place and works really well.
However, today, I may have discovered a drawback: I think I frostbited my knee.
I laid for 10 minutes with the ice pack saran wrapped to my knee very very tightly. It hurt, but I figured whatever, then it stopped hurting. When I pulled the saran wrap off, parts of my knee that had gotten stuck in the saran wrap were completely hard to the touch, white and frozen. Now, they’re all red and weird raised bumps.
So. Awesome.
Yesterday, when my knee was normal, I swam to the St. Francis Yacht Club (in San Francisco) from Alcatraz!!
No, there are no pictures. While some people take their cameras with them on their swim across the Bay, it may come as no surprise that I’m not one of those people.
When I signed up for the swim, i didn’t bother to check what exact day it was. I just knew I didn’t have anything to do on the 26th and I figured it was the weekend, because who would do a Alcatraz crossing on a Tuesday morning. Ugh, really early, too.
They also asked me for my mile swim time when I signed up and I guessed 24, which sounded right? That got me put in the fast “group,” which was a big “group” of me and this one other guy.
I was the first in the boat to jump in the water and I didn’t seize up and panic, so already the swim was going better than I hoped. My “group” hauled ass after that. The guy was not having any of my let’s stop and ask the kayaker questions, and I was NOT going to get left behind in the middle of the bay. I was working too hard and too focused on the other guy to even think about sharks except one time.
We made the crossing in 30 minutes, even with me stopping four times and asking questions, but I think the current was super fast pushing you along, the technical term.
Then, after getting up at 5 a.m. for that, I had a super long day of work (when your immediate boss leaves and they decide that everyone can just work more to replace him, it’s lots of fun), then I had a town council meeting to cover. 15 hours after I woke up, I got home.
