Using iTunes in the Classroom

Welcome to iTunes. This page is a How To on using iTunes on a daily basis and incorporating it into your teaching. I will go over the basics and give you a resource to come back to.

The Basics
Importing Music From CD’s: You bought the music, now let’s enjoy it.
Step One: Find your CD’s (This may be the hardest part)
Step Two: Put your CD in the side slot on the side of your computer.








Step Three: If you select “yes”, iTunes will import your CD. If you say “no”
 iTunes will open and show you all songs on your CD. You can still import your CD. In the lower right corner there is a “import CD” Button.
Step Four: Select songs you want on your machine. All will be selected. If there are songs you are not fond of, this is your chance to leave them out.
Step Five: Hit the Import button (bottom right) and go get a cookie.
Step Six: You are done. Wait for the Orange dot to stop waving and eject your CD. Use the eject button on the top right corner of your keyboard, or the eject symbol next to your disk in iTunes.

















Creating A Playlist: Organize your music in a meaningful way.
Step One: Select the “Plus Sign” in the lower left part of your window. This will create a new PlayList.
Step Two: When you create a new playlist, the title will say “untitled” and be highlighted blue. Just begin typing and the old name will disappear.



Step Three: Select your Music Library. This is on the left side at the top. You will see all of your music. 
Step Four: Go to the search bar in the top Right Corner. Type in the name of the artist of your CD. In this case Boston. All of your songs will appear.
Step Five: Click once on one song. This will highlight the track. Go to Edit>Select All. All of your songs will be blue. 
Step Six: Make sure you can see your playlist on the left. Now click and drag your “blue mass of music” to your playlist. When you hover over the playlist, you will see a “green Plus Sign” 
Step Seven: Let Go. Now when you want to hear that CD, click on the playlist with that name and you will see only those songs. If you want to see all of your music, select “Music Library” from the top left column.

Playing Your Music in iTunes: Finding the songs you want to hear.
From a Playlist: Scroll down your playlists until you find a CD you want to listen to. Click once on the playlist and the songs will appear in the window on the right. You may double-click on any song to begin listening. You may also click once and press “Play”.

Finding Songs in Your Library: Tracking down Tracks
If there is a particular song you would like to listen to, or you are putting together a playlist and need more songs, you can use the “Search” feature in iTunes.
Searching: 
Step One: Go to the top/right corner of the iTunes window. There will be a search bar.
Step Two: Type in the name of any song, artist, or album to create a list of all songs in your library that match your search.
Step Three: You may select the song of your choice or narrow your search further by adding more information to your search. You may also select Artist, Album, Composer, or Genre to narrow your results.
Step Four: Now that you have found your song, you may play it by double clicking or drag and drop it into a playlist.

Finding Track Names: In case you forget the name of “Track 05”.
Step One: Select “Mystery” tracks.
Step Two: Go to Advanced> Get Track Names
Note: You will need to be connected to the Internet to find track names.
Step Three:  You will see a window saying “Accessing Track Names” Just wait and iTunes will track down the song names.
Note: Sometimes it will note be able to find all of your track names. It accesses a huge database of song information, so it will find most.

 Using the Equalizer: Adjusting the sound.
The Equalizer is your sound booth to adjust how music sounds and set it to your listening preferences.
Step One: In the tool bar at the top of your screen: 
go to View> Show Equalizer.
Step Two: Play with the settings. Try the different slide bars and see what sounds good.
Step Three: Try the presets:
























Step Four: Feel free to experiment in the Equalizer, you can always set it back or turn it off entirely.

Creating Folders: For All you Organized People
Step One: File> New Folder
Step Two: Put some playlists in it. You can put multiple CD’s from one Artist, dinner music, work music, car songs... Anything you want. 

Visualizer: Integrating visuals into your Listening Experience
Step One: View> Turn On Visualizer (or “Apple/T”)
Step Two: You may view this in Full Screen by pressing “Apple/F”.
