The Society
for the
 Preservation of Oral health

It is hard for you to imagine a time when the concepts of “dental plaque” and the consequences of poor oral hygiene were not known. Today we take those concepts for granted. SPOH is recognized as the original preventive dental society in the United States, perhaps the world. Based upon the scientific microscopic evidence of Drs. C.C. Bass and Summter Arnim, the founders of this society were pioneers of the preventive dental concepts we still practice today.

In 1960, a group of visionary dentists from a cross-section of the US joined together to form the Society for the Preservation of Oral Health. Their first meeting was held in New Orleans at the Monteleone Hotel, a landmark hotel of the French Quarter since 1886.

From the early beginnings, this society has encouraged open mindedness and sought those who were willing to release any preconceived notions that might inhibit discovery; thus our logo of a hand releasing the branch. The society promotes the prevention of disease and thus the preservation of oral health.

Membership in the society is by invitation only.

“I have gained more from my membership in SPOH than any other dental organization. The continuing education and casual conversations with these brilliant dentists have helped me to become the dentist I always wanted to be.”
