All of my sculptures are hand built and most are Raku fired. Raku is a Japanese process in which ceramics are taken red-hot from the kiln and set into metal baskets filled with combustible materials. These are allowed to ignite and the flames interact with the glazes. The baskets are quickly covered and the fire smothered. The resulting glazes show an unpredictable array of coppery metallic streaks and smoky rainbows. That surprise is what I love about Raku: how different elements come together for a unique finished piece.
