These are the traits we learn about in order to write and communicate effectively.
At Wrightwood, we place an emphasis on developing our students’ writing skills in order to prepare them to be successful in all areas of their education. Writing is a skill that is used across the curriculum. Students come to the writing lab to use the skills and strategies they are learning in their classrooms. Not only do students learn to write, they also use their writing to learn.
The writing program at Wrightwood is designed to provide students with opportunities to write in a variety formats that will strengthen their ability to write for specific purposes. Within our structured framework, we offer students choices to select topics that are personally meaningful to them in order to foster their development as independent thinkers.
Projects students will be working on this year include writing stories, personal narratives, reports, biographies, poems, persuasive essays, and expository essays.
In addition to traditional pencil and paper writing, we also incorporate the use of technology in our writing program. Our writing lab is also a computer lab. Students use the computers to publish their written work, to conduct research for writing projects, and to practice writing skills through interactive games.
I view writing as both a science and an art. It is my goal to enable our students to be competent writers, and also to encourage them to enjoy using their language to express themselves and learn about their world.
