KAREN STRAUS

Karen was born in Southern California and grew up in Nairobi, Kenya, East Africa. Her first career was as an aquatics specialist in California, teaching swimming, life-saving, and skin and SCUBA diving. She began publishing articles and photographs about marine life during these years.
Leaving California, Karen pursued a career in journalism in Montana, Maine, Chicago, and New York, starting at newspapers and moving on to magazines and cookbooks, writing primarily about food and health. She also worked as a writer and producer on documentary films about wildlife and the marine environment.
Today, back home in Southern California, she writes primarily about birds, serving as the editor of the San Diego Audubon Society newsletter, SKETCHES. She helps coordinate the San Diego Bird Festival.
Karen and her husband, Eric Hanauer, a writer and photographer specializing in diving travel and marine life, dive together at home and around the world, photographing birds and marine life.
