                                                Do Your Homework
Its important to educate yourself when considering hiring a muralist, and the best way to do that is to go to the source. The most common concern for home or business owners seems to be the cost. One of the best ways to learn about cost?..........simply do an online search for ‘mural pricing’. Visit a few of the artists websites that have pricing information available and note their location, the quality of the work, and their pricing policies. Do a search for ‘artist forums’ or ‘muralist forums’. There are several public forums that have topics on pricing, some you may have to register with to access professional discussions, but its usually free to do so, and well worth the insight. You’ll have the opportunity to learn from the artists perspective and gain a better understanding of how pricing is calculated by some.
Choose an artist who has a large portfolio of work to show you, and be sure you like their style of painting and that it will work in your environment. Don’t assume an artist can paint any and all styles, be sure you see in their work (including mine) what you want.
Here you will find information that will help you understand the process of commissioning a mural with me. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

                                                      Consultation
An initial consultation at the proposed site where the mural will be located is the first step to the process. Many factors are considered in this first visit - size, surface, the design itself ie subject matter, color choices etc., and your budget for the project.
The consultation is FREE.
                                            Pricing
I know you want to see figures but, There are no set prices for mural painting. If you’ve done your homework (as suggested above) you will have learned that pricing is typically at the discretion of the artist.

I have no magic formula for pricing, no two projects are the same, there are simply too many variables. Then how do I work?
I want to know what you are trying to achieve, and what you’re budget is for the project.......that simple. This is ‘custom work’ created especially for you, and that involves knowing your budget.....large or small.
                                            Sketch
Once we have met, discussed your vision and your budget for the project, the next step is to design a preliminary sketch of the work to be performed (optional and/or when necessary). Because preparing a sketch is not a quick process, but one that involves many hours spent researching, designing, and doing the actual drawing, any photos the client has, pictures from magazines, things that will help to express the look and feel of how the client envisions the project, are always helpful.
                                                     Work Begins
After the initial consultation and the acceptance of the design, I will give you an estimate on the time it will take to do the work and we will schedule a date to begin. To the right are examples of some murals and how long they took to do. You can see as the detail in the work increases, so does the amount of time it takes to do the work.
A deposit of 30% will be required when scheduling a start date. If the job will take longer than one week an additional 20% will be due half way to completion, and the remaining 50% will be due ON THE DAY OF COMPLETION.
Please keep in mind that if any changes/additions are requested to the original design once the work has begun, the cost will need to be discussed and the final price will be adjusted accordingly
                                  Decorative Art Pricing
If you are interested in just having some decorative work done, work that will just take a couple of hours and is not a mural, there is a charge of $50.00 per hour.
                                                       Preparation
Prior to my arrival, the surface to be painted must be ready for me to work on. Any nail holes or cracks properly filled and sanded smooth, and also primed. Note: I can do this for you at an additional cost if need be. Any furniture etc. must be cleared from the space. I do supply drop clothes for the floors and any furniture that can not be moved.

                                                    SPECIAL NOTE
When commissioning a very detailed and time involved mural it is highly recommended that the mural be painted on canvas and then installed at the location (as were the ‘five day’ and ‘seven day’ murals to the right). The benefits are both for the client and the artist......your home or business will not be disrupted for days on end, and the artist will be able to focus completely on the work without distractions. Additional benefits to having murals painted on canvas are that you will have the ability to remove it, protecting your financial investment and enabling you to; save it for the next generation, relocate it, gift it, or even sell it if you like. So ask about this option during your consultation.
