Operation Mouse......

My Mighty Mouse stopped scrolling down, only upwards. The cleaning method as mentioned on the ‘Apple website’ didn’t solve the problem, so as a last resort: operation Mouse!

We start with removing the inner ring

Take a small screwdriver and carefully lift the inner ring. Carefully, as we don’t want to break the small pins attached to it.

There are in total 8 pins attached to the ring.

Fortunately they are all still there!

Now on to the most critical part of this operation: the outer ring. It is glued on and  on various sites on the  internet it is stated that you have to break this ring to reach the inner parts of the mouse. However, when you carefully cut this ring loose with a small sharp knife,

you can actually remove it in one piece...

Insert a small screwdriver at the arrow and click the mouse open at this side.

Now press with your thumbs the upper part of the mouse sideways and loosen the two hinges.

And there you are: the inner parts. You won’t have to disconnect the two flatcables (but you may, of course ...)

This is the place to be.

The casing of the roller-ball  is attached with three screws, which of course should come off..

The ball is fermly clamped in the casing with a white ‘inner casing’

Be careful with removing the inner casing as you can easily drop the small rollerpins. There should be four of them....

Look at the dirt collected inside. No wonder it stopped functioning!

(Detail: the black ‘wheelthingies’ are magnetic...)

Cleaning the inner casing and the rollerpins will solve our problem.

OK, you can assemble the mouse in the reverse way you disassembled it,  fix the outer ring with two small drops of superglue and you’ll have a working Mighty Mouse again!
