Loving Hand Orphan Day Care - Nketa 8 - near Bulawayo, Zimbabwe

I’ve worked most of my career as a software systems developer. But, in my early working life I was a welder. Because of the boiling hot Texas sun, I started working as an assistant petroleum engineer (engineering often transpires within air-conditioned rooms). To simplify that job I learned to program the earliest commercially available computers. Eventually I found my calling.

My calling is taking care of orphans in Zimbabwe. Most of the kids I help care for lost their parents in the HIV/AIDS pandemic that decimates sub-Saharan Africa. I let down my defenses for just a moment and these children called to me in a voice I could not ignore. An image on television, joyful faces, high-pitched musical voices and a few adults surrounded by hundreds of children shot an arrow through my heart. That arrow cannot now be withdrawn.

Life is mysterious. God is powerful beyond awe or comprehension. Come on in. The water is fine.
