Then I looked up - and there before me was a man with a measuring line in his hand!
I asked, “ Where are you going?”
He answered me, “To measure Jerusalem, to find out how wide and how long it is.”

With Zechariah’s vision in mind, and a measuring line in his hand (actually, about 30,000 red yardsticks), New York artist Gene Schmidt set out to measure the width and length of Manhattan, passing through a great diversity of neighborhoods, districts, and parks along the way. Each yardstick was numbered, used only once, and later stacked on Schmidt’s studio floor, forming a large cross-shaped sculpture. The performance/sculpture/pilgrimage took a little over a year to complete.
