The Great Camps of The Smokies are situated in Graham County, an undiscovered and largely undeveloped wilderness paradise in the far reaches of Western North Carolina. This region is home to some of the highest and most remote mountains east of the Mississippi River with elevations ranging from 1,177 to 5,560 feet.
Formerly difficult to access, Graham County has been slow to develop. As a result, large portions of the county have been acquired by the U.S. Forest Service. More than 80% of Graham County lies within the borders of the Nantahala National Forest, the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest and Slickrock Wilderness. The Appalachian Trail winds through the county.
Offering hundreds of thousands of wilderness acreage, Graham County is tucked into a natural bowl formed by several large mountain ranges in the southwestern Blue Ridge Mountains – The Great Smoky Mountains to the north, Snowbird Mountains to the southwest, Unicoi Mountains to the west and Nantahala Mountains to the southeast. The Cheoah Mountains lie throughout the center of Graham County.
