An impromptu village that emerged out of the desire to keep on fighting.
On May 1st, 2006, a new president for Gallaudet University in Washington, DC was announced. What ensued was a protest that is still ongoing. This protest on campus spurred a variety of responses. One such response was the formation of Tent City, located just behind the main gates at 8th and Florida. Sixty-some tents were set up on the front yard of Gallaudet University for twelve days, from May 2nd to May 13th. There are plenty of blogs and newspaper stories that have been documenting the events surrounding the protest. But there’s nothing that tells us about the inhabitants of Tent City. Who are they? That is what we have started to do. To compile the stories of people who have set much in this fight.
As of May 18, 2006: 48 tents, 113 inhabitants. Because of the roving nature of Tent City inhabitants, not all inhabitants or tents have been recorded here. We are trying to be as complete as possible, so please contact us if you know someone is missing. Some names have been excluded to protect their privacy.
October 2nd, Tent City returned. It first started again on the front yard of Gallaudet then moved to the middle, right smack in the heart of Gallaudet’s campus.
October 13, Tent City is all over Gallaudet now. Some tents are at the front, some are on the mall, some are by the gates.
