It turns out that Colorado’s wine-making history dates back to the 1880s, but the vines were pulled up during prohibition. So the current industry is fairly new. I haven’t liked the Colorado wines I’ve bought in liquor stores here, but the wines we tasted in Paonia and Palisades aren’t distributed to liquor stores and are quite good. We brought several cases home for our “wine cellar.” (Coincidentally, the next meeting of our wine club will feature Colorado wines.) The vineyards in the area remind me a lot of the vineyards around Geneva. The two vineyards pictured are Terror Creek Winery (owned by a woman who worked in the Swiss vineyards for 27 years before getting her certificate there) and Stone Creek Winery (owned by a couple who moved to Paonia from Boulder). Stone Creek is constructing a new wine-tasting room and just finished building the cellar; this is the second year they’ve produced wine. Both vineyards were sold out of their most popular wines.
