New to Judo?
Comberton Judo has Clubmark!
Clubmark is a cross-sport quality accreditation for clubs with junior sections. Clubmark accreditation is awarded by sport England to clubs that comply with minimum operating standards in four areas:
• The playing programme
• Duty of care and child protection
• Sports equity and ethics
• Club management
Clubmark is ideal for parents who would like to know about the quality of the club before they send their children. For more information visit www.clubmark.org.uk
Beginners Courses
The club occasionally runs beginners courses but people are welcome at anytime, just come along and either watch or join in. The different classes are shown on the welcome page but if you cannot decide which class is for you then just email. Judo jackets will be given to all new players for the duration of the class and when you’re happy you want to stay you can buy a kit from the club.
For more information email Darren.
Cost
The cost of each term is based upon £3.50 per lesson and is paid termly, it therefore varies depending on the length of the term. As of 2009 there will also be an annual fee, this will be £20 per year and paid in April. Beginners will have their first lesson free and then can pay £4 per week until it is time for the next lot of term fees. Beginners will not need to pay the annual fee until the six month point when they will pay £10 and if they wish to pay termly then it will be £38.50 for the term April- July 09.
What to expect?
The origins of judo base it’s philosophy on mutual respect, discipline, confidence, integrity and fair play. Comberton judo club is a safe practice environment that is part of the national judo structure and works closely with local schools and universities.
Judo is a bit of a “rough and tumble” sport but it is fun and very diverse. Anybody, regardless of body shape, gender, age and physical ability can do judo. Judo is about being able to beat your opponent and everyone is good at something, you just have to find out what you’re good at and impose that upon your opponent.
In the fundamentals class the focus is on fun and physical literacy- agility, balance, co-ordination and speed. So although the class is for 7-11 year olds there maybe older children who would benefit from more physical literacy than judo training. All of this is learnt through judo skill and games as well as some basic gymnastics.
The Learn-to-Train class is for children aged 11-14 years old although there maybe some younger or older children in this group. This group focuses more on “judo for judos’ sake” classes focus upon judo as a competitive sport (although not all players in this group compete) and on judo skills, tactics and fitness.
Finally the train to train class. This is a difficult class to teach and manage the focus is on two groups of people, adult beginner and the younger high performance players. Sometimes the class is split but mostly they work together. Adult beginners can come along anytime to have a look and see what it is like. Please don’t worry about not being fit enough or getting picked on by 15 year olds! You can do a little or as much as you wish. For more information on judo world wide and it’s origins click here.
Why not fix the ages for the classes?
We put ages on the classes as a rough guideline, the coaches and junior sports leaders from the club can very quickly assess players and put them into the correct class for there ability. The class someone attends is based upon their physical, emotional and social development and not their chronological age. It also allows some people to train if they are not available on the night when “their correct” class would be training.
What to Bring
Whether an adult or a child you should bring with you a sports kit (Shorts or tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt that you don’t mind being pulled around) and a water bottle. We will give you a judo jacket for the session.
