On Sunday we had a very special celebration put on for us by our church. It has been 20 years that David has been Pastor of Vermont South Evangelical Church and our dear friends there put on a lovely lunch and an afternoon of festivities. It was so humbling and moving to see the trouble they had all been to to make the day so special. We had an album specially made for us and also a dvd of photos from the 20 years. As we sat and watched the dvd together we were reminded of how much we have all been through together as a church family. We’ve seen each others children grow up, get married, have their own babies, we’ve seen each other getting older and wiser (usually), we’ve been through the good times and the tough times together and it is easy to forget some of those events. Life is so busy that we often don’t take the time to sit down and go back through the events of the past. It’s so important to do that - to refresh your memory. I often think scrapbooking is great for that reason it really does tell a full story of past days. Not just a photo in an album but a page that will usually describe the photo sometimes with a lot of journalling and embellishments, sometimes with just a few evocative words. And even though scrapbooking goes through different trends and styles and those pages may look dated in days to come - kind of like the clothing we see ourselves in in older photos - it is that “fashion look or trend” that tells you about the age of the photo as does the style of your scrapbook pages. I hope my children and my grandchildren and my husband and I will enjoy our family scrapbooks in the future as we sit and look at them together and remember.
David was given medals for his twenty years - he was a bit silly with them as you can see.....
AND yes..... we were made to dress up as befitted our position....... and we had our own choir who had been secretly practising a few musical items including “My Old Man’s an All Black” (it’s an old favourite of David’s and is sung to the turn “My Old Man’s a Dustman”)
This is how we looked 20 years ago...... photos are a bit fuzzy as they were photographed from a screen.
and a more up to date photo (with Claire our eldest granddaughter)
And a very very special touch. A cake had been made that was exactly like the one made for us 20 years ago. How special is that!
