CHICAGO COMIC-CON Indie Review #5: "THE GUNS OF SHADOW VALLEY" Convention Preview Edition
In this 18 page “Preview” of their web comic David Wachter and James Andrew Clark take us to Malice, Oklahoma. A rough place for rough men with secrets lurking behind every page turn.
We are introduced to Frank, the classic “stranger who comes to town.” From there the story takes several compelling twists and turns. Surprises abound and characterizations are very well-handled, giving the story a complete, realistic feel. The dialogue is spot on, both in setting characters personalities as well as keeping with the vernacular of the day.
However strong the story may be (and it is), Dave Wachter’s art really steals the show. His line work is great as usual. He brings the town of Malice to life with his backgrounds and coloring - a gray, muddy place who has seen it best days gone by. The panel layout is somewhat traditional, but Mr. Wachter branches out from time to time for a great page like this...
There is also a nice two-page section of the story which consists of face-to-face splash pages. The first is seen below, but I wouldn’t want to wreck the next page for any of you...
The lettering is well done by Thomas Mauer, as was his design and production on the book. A great marrying of words and pictures - in other words, a great (web) comic!

At Oskar Blues, we dig bodacious beer. We carefully craft our robust brews in small (20-barrel) batches with loads of the best ingredients. In 2002 we became the first US microbrewery to brew and can its own beer. We started hand canning our beer two cans at a time, on a small table-top machine. Our uncanny efforts have also allowed us to enjoy some head-spinning excitement. Since we began canning, our beers have won loads of honors and accolades and we've grown by over 800%. We're now the largest-producing brewpub in the United States (hooray!) and our scrappy little outfit is one of the most talked about craft breweries in America. Check us out at www.oskarblues.com.
