CCBD offers volunteer opportunities for inspiring projects in Costa Rica and Ecuador. 

Marine Turtle Conservation Project

WHEN:           July through December

WHERE:         Guaria de Osa, on the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica

WHO:            The Council for Cultural and Biological Diversity (CCBD) oversees the project.

WHAT:           Volunteers assist with the following:

  1. build turtle nurseries and determine beach zones

  2. make and repair project signs

  3. clean up beach

  4. monitor turtle activity on beach throughout night and early morning

  5. relocate eggs to nurseries

  6. protect hatchery from theft

  7. release baby turtles

  8. photograph project activities

  9. gather information for research database

 

Reforestation in the High Andes Project

WHEN:           Year-round
WHERE:          Ecuador

WHO:             This is a partnership with CCBD and the Pilcos, a pure-hearted and spirited

                       Kichua family who subside primarily on traditional agriculture and weaving in the High

                       Andes.

WHAT:            Volunteers live at the Pilco homestead and help with the following activities:

  1. daily chores with the family

  2. cleaning or weeding the tree nursery

  3. feeding animals

  4. participating in agricultural life

  5. re-potting or transplanting trees

  6. possible participation in reforestation sessions in the High Andes (depends on the time of your arrival).

Tamia Yura (Rain Tree) Ethnobotanical Gardens and Family Farm

WHEN:            Year-round

WHERE:           Ecuador

WHO:              Tamia Yura is a family group of ethnic Kichuas from the province of Napo, in the

                        Ecuadorian Amazon south of the city of Quito.

WHAT:             Volunteers reforest a vital conservation area with native plant species:

  1. planting with wood-producing, fruit-bearing, ornamental, and medicinal plants

  2. seed saving with heritage and heirloom seeds from ancient ancestral plants

  3. assorted tasks at the Ethno-Agro-Ecological Center containing 32 hectares of primary and secondary forest



In Ecuador, you can also volunteer with Jatun Sacha, a non-profit foundation that is dedicated to rainforest conservation and environmental education in the world’s richest biodiversity hotspot.


In addition to special projects, we offer year-round volunteer opportunities at Guaria de Osa in Costa Rica.
